AGT Case Study: POLARIS
Gas assist injection molding is a technique used the world over to manufacture complex plastic parts by applying uniform pressure throughout the molded part. Pressure from nitrogen gas creates channels within the part, which eliminates warping, sink marks, and internal stress.
In early 2013, global recreational vehicle manufacturing giant Polaris Industries (Polaris) began a search for a high pressure nitrogen generating system for one of its manufacturing facilities located in northern Mexico, a search made necessary by its own usage of gas assist injection molding.
Polaris reached out to Advanced Gas Technologies Inc. in search of a solution. The Advanced Gas Technologies team conducted a detailed assessment of both Polaris' current and future nitrogen needs. This needs assessment was based on discussions with Polaris' key engineering personnel and gauging of current nitrogen purity, pressure, and flow requirements.
Based on the information obtained in those discussions, Advanced Gas Technologies presented Polaris with a detailed proposal for the supply of a turnkey high pressure nitrogen generating system including:
- a nitrogen generator with upgraded control capabilities for remote monitoring
- a redundant booster compressor system including two 5,000 psig booster compressors that automatically alternate
- a high pressure nitrogen storage system
Advanced Gas Technologies also provided technical assistance and system drawings to support local installers and arranged local ongoing service support for the local Polaris operations personnel.
Mexico is not a country known for being a competitive market for conventional nitrogen gas supply which made the decision for an onsite nitrogen generating system relatively simple. The system had paid for itself within one year of start-up and has been problem-free throughout its time of operation.
