Onsite Nitrogen Gas Generators for the Plastics Industry

Onsite Nitrogen Gas Generators for the Plastics Industry

The plastics industry is one of the biggest manufacturing industries in the world, and rightly so. If you look around you, plastic is probably lying next to you. Plastic has many applications—from packaging in the food and beverage, and pharmaceutical industries, to automotive and building and construction industries, plastics are everywhere.

But did you know that nitrogen is a key element in plastic manufacturing? Read on to find out why and how the plastics industry uses nitrogen in their manufacturing processes.

How the Plastics Industry Uses Nitrogen Gas

Nitrogen is a dry, inert gas, meaning it is non-reactive and does not contain moisture or water vapor in its natural state. The plastics industry needs a dry environment for many of its processes to maintain the products' quality and integrity and prevent oxidation during operation, which may lead to discoloration and defects in the product.

Here is how the plastics industry uses nitrogen for different applications:

Injection Molding: Direct contact with oxygen is one thing to avoid when molding plastics. Nitrogen can help displace any oxygen in the mold and prevent oxidation.

Gas Assist Injection Molding (GAIM): Gas Assisted Injection molding is used for creating large, complicated  plastic parts. It involves partially filling the mold with polymer and injecting high-pressure nitrogen gas (N2) to prevent shrinkage during drying. The nitrogen expands the polymer, ensuring complete mold filling and preventing breakdown or shrinkage during cooling.

Plastic Extrusion: This produces items like pipes and tubing by melting plastic material and pressing it through a die to form a tube shape. Nitrogen displaces the oxygen, prevents residue formation and ensures the quality of the end product.

Tank Blanketing: Nitrogen gas is also used to blanket tanks where molten plastic is placed to prevent it from contact with oxygen in ambient air.

The Importance of Nitrogen in Improving the Quality of Plastics

Nitrogen helps to reduce cycle times, lower material costs, reduce waste and achieve stability in injection molding and fluid injection processes. Nitrogen also contributes to the development of biodegradable plastics.

Advanced Gas Technologies' Nitrogen Generation Systems for Plastics Manufacturing

Advanced Gas Technologies offers a full range of PSA and Membrane-type nitrogen systems for the plastics industry to generate nitrogen onsite and ensure a more efficient operation. Membrane technology is ideal for applications with a purity requirement below 99.5%, and Pressure Swing Absorption (PSA) is perfect for applications with a nitrogen purity requirement over 98%.

At Advanced Gas Technologies, we offer our clients all the support they need 24/7 to ensure the smooth running of their nitrogen generators. Our service support includes installation service, maintenance and service spares, preventative maintenance contracts, and system operation and maintenance training. The best part is our extensive network of industry partners allows us to extend our services throughout Canada, the U.S.A., and many regions worldwide.
